MOORISH ARCHITECTURE IN INDIA

The Moorish Mosque at Kapurthala was designed by the French architect Manateaux, recreating the design of the great Qutbiya Mosque of Markesh in Morocco. The fine art works on the inner dome were painted by artists of the Lahore Mayo School of Arts, and have since remained untouched. The three saucer shaped fountains have long stopped sprinkling water for wazu, a Muslim ritual. More than 300 Muslims offer namaz every week at this 75 year old monument of architectural and social importance. INTACH experts reviewed the project proposal for restoration of this historic Mosque, which will be funded by the Agha Khan Foundation.
